August 2016

Dear East Pikeland Families,

Welcome to the start of the 2016-2017 school year at East Pikeland Elementary! I hope this letter finds you and your family enjoying a wonderful summer vacation. We have been hard at work preparing for another rigorous and exciting school year. Our building looks beautiful and ready to welcome everyone back thanks to our amazing custodial staff! Mrs. Trout and Mrs. Kraynak, our office secretaries, are organized and ready for the big first day back to school! The teachers will be returning soon to set up classrooms and prepare their plans for another year of learning and growing. Mrs. Sturdivant, our Assistant Principal, and I simply cannot wait to see students back in the classrooms on Monday, August 29th ready and refreshed to face the new challenges this year has to offer!

All back to school documents are now available on our website. Please review these documents carefully. Also, you will find that there are some new additions to our webpage this year that contains valuable information regarding school procedures. Please continue to check our website for the most up-to-date information throughout the remaining days of summer break.

Today, student Skyward information will be available to all parents to view your child’s account which includes information on their classroom teacher and the assigned bus stop.

With the construction of the new elementary school building on schedule, this will be our last school year in the East Pikeland Elementary building. Look for information throughout the year on ways we plan to pay tribute to this historic building and all of the memories it holds for so many of us.

Welcome First Graders and New Students
We invite all of our new students and their parent/guardians to join us for the New Student Orientation on Thursday, August 25th at 2:00 – 2:45PM in the All Purpose Room. There will be a brief presentation to start, followed by a tour of the building and ending with an opportunity for students and parents to see their classrooms and meet their teachers. We encourage all of our new students and their parents to attend and learn more about our school community, including ways to volunteer and help our East Pikeland Home and School Association.

First Graders
We are looking forward to meeting all of our new first graders this year! All first graders will who attend the New Student Orientation will receive a tag that indicates the child’s name, homeroom teacher, and PM dismissal procedures. Please verify that the dismissal information on the label is correct and notify the office immediately if it is incorrect. This will help our adults make sure our new first graders are where they need to be on the first day of school. If you cannot make the New Student Orientation, please contact the office for your tag. We ask all parents to fasten this label to your child’s backpack on the first day of school and to keep it on his/her backpack for the duration of the first month of school. First grade parents should review the back to school information on our website. We encourage you to contact the office if you have any questions.

Reminders
Below are a few reminders for all parents as we begin a new school year. More detailed information regarding these topics can be found on the East Pikeland website:

Annual Student Information Update - infosnap
-Please complete the annual student information update in infosnap starting on August 1, 2016 for the upcoming school year. You should have received a district email/letter prior to August 3, 2016 requesting you to update your child(ren)’s information and complete the yearly sign-offs. This information is vital to your child(ren)’s safety and well-being while at school (emergency contacts, health update, and yearly permissions). To update your information after August 1,2016 either click the link in the email that you received, or go to the district website at www.pasd.com. infosnap can be found under Parents in the main navigation bar. To complete the process, you will need the 15-digit snapcode that was provided by the district. If your child attended PASD as of the last day of school (June 10, 2016) and is returning for the 2016-2017 School Year, you must complete this process. The due date is August 28, 2016.

- We will be holding our traditional holiday parties this year. Our Fall Festival will be held on October 28th due to the weekend schedule. Our Winter Holiday party will be on December 23rd. Our Valentine’s Day celebration will be held on February 15th , also due to the upcoming weekend. We look forward to these events every year and are always appreciative of the help and support from our parent volunteers! We encourage all parents to include one healthy snack, and volunteers will need to check with the classroom teacher regarding any food restrictions or allergies before planning a holiday treat.

-Due to the many students with allergies and food reactions food items to celebrate student birthdays are not permitted. Parents who wish to send in a birthday recognition are asked to send in a non-food item such as pencils, stickers, or a donation of a book to the school or classroom library.

-Again this year, we will have two bikes for a boy and a girl who have demonstrated perfect attendance. Each marking period, the names of students with perfect attendance will be entered into a drawing for the bikes. Students with perfect attendance during all four marking periods will have up to four chances to win. While we do not want students to come to school if they are sick, we do want to communicate to students that coming to school is important.

-We continue to take the safety of our children very seriously. Parents should review the Elementary School Handbook for more information regarding our school policies and procedures. Click here to view the Elementary School Handbook: http://www.pasd.com/for_students/student_handbooks

-All visitors and volunteers will be expected to provide a driver’s license so that all visitors can be scanned through our system. This is for the safety and security of our students. No visitor or volunteer will be permitted to go directly to classroom or to any area of the building without signing in at the main office. Teachers are busy throughout the day working with and supervising our students and are not available upon immediate request. Please call the office to set up a meeting when one is necessary. We appreciate your attention to these procedures.

-The volunteer application and other related forms are now available online. Please visit the link below for more information. In order to volunteer, you will need to have these forms completed online or with a hard copy sent to the office before you will be permitted to volunteer. We appreciate your help adhering to the Commonwealth regulations.

As I look ahead to my second year as Principal of East Pikeland, I am confident that this year will continue to demonstrate your children’s unique abilities to succeed. Our East Pikeland teachers will continue to hold them to high expectations, support them on their journey of learning new skills and content, help them to understand that mistakes or failures are opportunities to learn and grow, and most importantly, work to mold your children into the hard working student who achieve success.

This year will be a memorable one as we say goodbye to our building yet, we are not saying goodbye to our school community. We may change our name and our location, but the families and children, as well as the teachers and staff that make up the East Pikeland Elementary family, will continue to stick together and accomplish great things.

Thank you in advance for all of your efforts this year to support your children’s learning. We could not accomplish the high level of achievement and academic success without your dedication. I look forward to seeing all of our families throughout the school year but especially seeing our students on Monday, August 29th!

I hope that you enjoy these last few weeks of summer!

Appreciatively,

Robyn Spear
